Specifying the Size of Bars in Bar Graphs

Version 1

Intro

You can format the size of bars in Bar graphs using various options in Chart Properties, including the following:

  • Changing the percentage of space taken up by each bar

  • Specifying a fixed bar width for each bar

  • Specifying how bars appear in graphs with only one bar

Changing bar width or height percentage

In a Bar graph, each bar takes up a set amount of space. By default, a bar takes up about 90% of its given space. By changing the Width Percentage or Height Percentage for a vertical or horizontal bar graph, respectively, you can change the percentage of space taken up by each bar. Possible values range from 0 (at which bars appear as lines) to 100 (at which bars touch other bars).

The following example shows a Vertical Bar graph with a Width Percentage of 20.

The following example shows the same graph with a Width Percentage of 100.

To change the percentage of space taken up by bars in a chart,

  1. Open the Analyzer for the chart you want to edit.

  2. In Chart Properties, click Bar Settings.

  3. Enter the desired percentage value in the Width Percentage field (for a graph with vertical bars) or Height Percentage field (for a graph with horizontal bars).

Specifying a fixed bar width or height

You can set a fixed width or height in pixels for bars in a vertical or horizontal Bar graph. You do this by entering the desired width or height in the Fixed Bar Width or Fixed Bar Height properties, respectively. If a Width Percentage value has been specified, this property supersedes that percentage.

If the Fixed Bar Width or Fixed Bar Height exceeds the total space allocated to each bar, bars will overlap. However, in vertical bar graphs, the amounts of space allocated to the chart preview in the Analyzer and the Details version are not proportional. So a chart with a Fixed Bar Width of "78" appears with overlapping bars in the preview:

But the chart appears without overlapping bars in the Details view:

To specify a fixed bar width or height,

  1. Open the Analyzer for the chart you want to edit.

  2. In Chart Properties, click Bar Settings.

  3. Enter the desired width or height in the Fixed Bar Width or Fixed Bar Height field, respectively.

Specifying the appearance of bars in single-bar charts

Note: As of our October 2016 release, the Allow Wide Bars/Allow Tall Bars options have been deprecated.

You can use the Allow Wide Bars/Allow Tall Bars option to specify whether the bar in a single-bar vertical or horizontal Bar graph uses the full width or height of the available space. If this option is selected, the bar takes up all of the space in the graph, as shown in the following example. Otherwise, a normal-sized bar appears in the center of the chart space.

To allow wide bars in single-bar graphs,

  1. Open the Analyzer for the chart you want to edit.

  2. In Chart Properties, click Bar Settings.

  3. Check either Allow Wide Bars (in a graph with vertical bars) or Allow Tall Bars (in a graph with horizontal bars).
